I would have given almost anything to get this close to a launch. But alas it seems my only opportunity was lost a few years back.
Going to miss seeing these images

Excellent shots! I've been to two shuttle launches, but never had the camera equipment to get good shots. It's hard to believe we are at the end of an era-gonna really miss the shutttle program:cry:

Thanks Guys. One more. We are discussing if this is actually a reflection of Commander Ham in the left seat. In this 1:1 crop of the takeoff,I could not help notice a red/orange area in the cockpit window. I enhanced the colors just a tad bit in the window area to bring out the details

That is probably his suit, yes. It's more likely you'd be seeing his helmet too, but that could very well be his 'pumpkin' suit. A lot, lot less likely that it'd be a reflection of the external tank.

Great shots!

Like you said, highly unlikely that it's the external fuel tank. The angle the window tilts back would prevent that type of reflection.

OP: Nice images. Better than the one NASA Image of the Day has on their site.

Yes. you are correct. It was pretty much a slam dunk. We compared notes and the orbiter does put the pilot very close to the window unlike some aircrafts. As you can see in the picture below on landing, the commander can be clearly seen in the side window.

I have been getting asked if I can see inside the orbiter, so seeing the reflection of the astronaut's suit at 3.1 miles on takeoff is probably pretty close to what I can now promise! ;-)a

Thanks! Got a few more times to improve the quality too!

I put together a series of the launch shot...10 out of perhaps 75. I put them up on my site. The link below will lead to it. Enjoy!

I am going to draw from library and put up more pages dedicated to different facets of the program as we countdown to the end of the Space Transport System.

The shot below is one of them.
