Well not exactly what you may have in mind for "transportation" but believe it or not, this is my transportation for 4 weeks at a time. It has 8 16 cylinder Caterpilar 280 engines which produce power for the rig, and also the propulsion/positioning of the 8 thrusters (2 at each corner). During Sea trials we managed to clock 7 knots only on our own propulsion which is quite fast for a big square floating in the water ;). We are currently moving this rig to Brazil from Singapore where is was built last year.

During our move to Brazil, we were under tow even though we are capable of moving ourselves. But it's not exactly what we refer as fuel efficient.

Also a 100% crop of the above. just wanted to show you the tug had barbed wire on the bow to prevent pirates from boarding.

Good shots of it. I've been on a few of those. How long did the trip take?

I was on from Singapore to S. Africa where we conducted a crew change. It took us about 6 weeks for that part of the trip. Our speeds varied as we ran into weather, one of our two tugs encountered problems, and of course orders from office to reduce speed as our company wasn't working on our schedule. They are now transiting the Atlantic, and somewhere in the middle. I heard average speed for the Atlantic has been about 6 knots.

Thanks Frank. What rigs have you been on and why? Thought you were a classic car collector? :)
