Avocets are now nesting at one of my lunchtime birding spots and I managed to get a few shots yesterday. I think this was a natural drainage but there is now development along one side. Not the most scenic spot around, but birds like it.

The avocets are nesting between the water an a paved pathway. I precisely located two nests, but I'm could tell by the birds behavior that I passed close to several others.

Excellent shots Ken, that's the first time I've seen the nest and eggs posted here. Good looking bird!

Pretty shots, Ken. I never see those birds here, although they must be around. Good for you finding the nest, too.

Very nice work Ken and a great find. They sure are beautiful in their breeding color.

Are you planning a morning or evening visit? Lower/warmer light would really bring out the colors.

Thanks for the kind comments.

Stan, they winter on the Gulf coast, but lack the red on their heads and necks. Even in black and white they are very elegant birds.

Steve, I hope to get back under better conditions before the eggs start hatching. They'll be much harder to get close to once the chicks are out and about.

Nice shots! This is one of those birds that is on my list of ones I REALLY want to encounter. Even if I don't get any shots I'd still feel lucky to get to see them. Something about them. Great job on these but I do think a return trip out in better light should be in order.
