I'll get a nex5 until canon comes up with an answer.

And guess what, neither will fit in your pocket, will they? So the Nex needs a slightly smaller bag, so what? You still need a bag.

Guess what, m9s don't fit in pockets, the g series cameras don't fit in pockets. :p

I'd rather buy the real deal and get the Leica.

+1!

Peter isn't that the cost of the body alone? I had Leica systems twice. Each time I couldn't afford lenses that I needed for my business. Now it's just fun, and I can't afford the body so I'm not tempted.
At the time Leica's produced images that I couldn't get with my other cameras. And special quality too. I had an M3 first, then an M4P. They've always been expensive systems.
Best,

Dave

A lot of folks seem to think the Sigma DP series, especially the new ones - DP2s and someday soon the DP1x - are a poor person's X1.

I asked my local dealer what he thought of the X1 just hoping it would be the answer, he said it was really slow to find focus bit once found, it put out a good image. Not a strong recommendation for a $2,000 point and shoot.

I've always wanted a Leica but that was in my film days, honestly I think Canon could blow the world away with a camera in the size range of a M9. No not a rangefinder but imagine a full sensor or 1/3 crop identical to the ones in the 1DMKIII or IDsMKIII but otherwise built with similar design as the G11 that has a fixed fast zoom that is of L quality.

Yes I'm talking about a larger point and shoot with the image quality of a 5D2 for the professional, the traveler and every photographer who wants that Canon/Leica/Nikon top quality in a simple, compact, quality package when you don't want or can't carry all your gear or to have as backup. No it won't replace your DSLR function wise in some cases but for some it would be a huge blessing.

Yes it would cost, yes I know thre would be many who want interchangeable lenses and that would be neat too but I think there is an advantage to making it an all in one camera like the G9. my guess as to cost- $2,000.

Guys, if you want real quality and innovation you're gonna have to pay for it. The sensor for the M9 was specially designed by kodak for the camera. Even with the special sensor, the M9 is still no where near the high ISO capabilities of the 5D2. Even lacking all the bells and toys of a modern dslr, the M9 is still forbiddingly expensive. We can't just yap all day about wanting this or that feature all for under $2k. Rangefinders will also eat into canon's dslr sales, so be prepared to pay a price premium for a canon rangefinder just so it won't compete withnormal dslr sales. Then who's gonna buy the canon rangefinder that's way more expensive but has less features?

Jannie, such a camera I wish they would make, but don't you think that would lead to a marketing slaugher of their higher end boxes? I think each model is designed/priced bracketed to cover a particular segment of the epuipment spectrum. To have one model stepping on the toes of not only the next model above it, but possibly the 2-3 versions above that...would be an unwise business choice for Canon.

Still, a person can dream.

Yes in manufacturing and marketing a company tries to fit price points to cover every profitable nook and cranny, talkingbthis over with other photographers and one Canon rep, there is a huge market for something invetween. I had this discussion with a friend whom I also shoot for and who also does a lot of his own photography for his manufacturing business. I was puzzled by Canon's staying out of the 4/3rds market and he (a Canon shooter himself with a 1DsMKIII and 1DMKIII) quite clearly felt Canon is letting the other companies do their market research and development for them.

He said it is not always smart to always be the first in the area of new products, sometimes it's best to let the other companies invest ten million figuring out what people really are willing to buy into with a new product, see what the directions that market are taking and then how your company can excel and profit if they decide to jump in.

To start a new product line it means taking designers away from where they are often still needed and get them focused on a completely new project, or hire new people and bring them up to speed. He was making a lot if sense. I know that i this really looks lucrative that Canon will be figuring out how the can not enter into the market but to be a leader, that is an image they have to maintain across the board.

The G series camerasnare awsome for what they are, but I do believe there is a need for a camera with a much larger sensor, this is also for the professional who needs a backup/nsignificant looking camera.

It won't be a rangefinder simply because autofocus is the accepted standard, it probably will not have a viewfinder, it has to have a big enough sensor to be able to produce a photo for the cover of a magazine, it has to be small enough to carry in a handbag, I expect it will have interchangable lenses but I hope not, I would rather it just be a bigger version of the G11 with the equivalent 28-140mm zoom that is an f2.8 or if possible a shorter zoom that is a fixed 2.8. For a photojournalist, then an F2 would be better but that might put the price way up.

I'm not talking about a cheap camera, but even if they could make somehow a very small pro camera.

It has been mentioned in an interview with someone from Canon that having a mirror in a camera does not mean it can't be small, this is interesting. When some mention the M9 I tend ony to think about a camera the size, not one that functions like it with the rangefinder focusing, if that was the way to go then a lot more working photographers would still be using them.

it sounds like they'll be making an olympus e but with a larger sensor - I hope.

e-420 vs rebel 450d.

if it uses the eos mount, the overall package won't be smaller though.

it's too bad epson stopped making the R-D1 series:

IMAGE: http://a.img-dpreview.com/news/0603/epsonrd1sspecs.jpg

that with some voightlander lenses made for a pretty nice option for waaaaay less money.

The other camera I've heard is great, not small, not interchangable, but great is this leica/panasonic LC1:

they go for <$1k on ebay from time to time...

Just a caution...based on my experience.
I had an M3 that was stolen. It was my favourite camera of all time. I found an M4P on sale, used, and bought it without much thought. Camera Lust. I couldn't let it get away, and anticipated that it would work as well for me as the M3.
I couldn't work with the M4P, where the M3 had been incredible. I had an entire system, and later sold it. Leica holds its value. If I had spent time with the camera in the store I would have determined that it was nice for others, not for me.
2 cents worth...
