Hi Friends,

Sorry for a basic question. I wanted to transfer some big amount of picture files from my new
laptop (windows 7 64 bit ) to my old desktop (vista 64)

What is the best way to do it . I don't have wifi in my house, never had a router, no wifi adapter in my desktop. only wifi adapter is in my new notebook.

What is the difference between the 2 method and which one should i use. is one method faster that the other.
file sizes transfer usually small amout 20 mbs or less ( pdfs word documents) but once in a few months may be 20 GBs after vacation.

1. i know i can buy a crossover rj-45 cable to hook up both ports in my computers
2. how about buying a wire with 2 usb ends , will this also do ? eg

Belkin Easy Transfer Cable for Windows 7 in amazon? -
or
Diamond USB PC to PC File Transfer device in amazon?

It looks to be the usb is more neat? or lets say more modern?

All I want to do is hook up the two computers in my house to transfer files easily .

Any suggestions or insight would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Dennis

What kind of size are we talking exactly? 2, 20 300GBs? And often do you want to transfer stuff, once a week, few times a day or once a month?

not often, may be once in a few months.
mainly for vacation photos ( I want to down load camera photos into the notebook) so I can have more space in my compact flash, so at the end of the trip probably 20 GBs,

but if i ever use it on a daily basis for office work probably on 20 MBs for pdfs and documents.

thanks much

You could just plug in a USB harddrive into the laptop and copy the files to that, then plug the USB harddrive in your desktop and not bother to copy them into the desktop PC but directly access the files from there.

If you copy from CF directly to the USB harddrive, you don't even need to copy to the internal harddrive of the laptop!

Yeah exactly what Wilt said!
For that level of infrequency and small amount I wouldn't bother with anything more than a USB Stick. A word of warning personally I would avoid ebay for these because there are a lot of fakes and they lie about their capacity just like SD Cards.

I'd go for an own label one of one of the big retailers. Play.com for example in Europe make their own SD Cards and USB sticks they are 100% kosher and a bit cheaper than the big brands. Are you in North America or the EU? What do you lot have Radio Shack and Walmart? Well I just had a look RS and they are taking the proverbial with their prices. Walmart is selling 16GB Kingstons and Sandisks at an ok-ish price.

Amazon USA is quite a bit cheaper still if you do want to go down that path

Actually Wilt didn't say that I just realised he said drive not USB stick. Either would do the job though :D

Not as large as a hard drive but I use a compact flash card in a reader hooked up to usb. I put it on the card on one computer, switch the reader to the other computer and load them on. Since I hve an 8 gig card, I can do a fair amount. It is not as fast as the hard drivce though. Rick

Best way is to get a crossover network cable and transfer between the 2 computers, cheapest method also comparing to other methods requiring new computer components.

Thanks everybody for your insight into this. I am thinking of getting the cheapest method , the crossover calbe? where do i get this online? I went to walmart I did not see this item.

I have 40 GBs of compact flash and for this 2 week vacation, I think I will shoot alot of photos, with the video from canon 5dm2 , I am guessing may be ? 100GBs.

Is it possible to transfer via USB to USB cable like I mentioned above? Is it faster? Which online place is the cheapest for the crossover cable RJ45?

Thanks much for your help. I appreciate it.

Are you sure you need a cross-over cable? Most notebook chipsets have automatic crossover so you can use a conventional ethernet cable. Check the specs of your laptop for this feature. Otherwise, NewEgg has crossover cables.

I just use my CF cards and card reader to transfer images from my netbook to PC.

I could setup a local network (have a wireless router) but, for the few times I do this, I'm just too lazy to go through the trouble.

Just out of curiosity, I don't know if this is something you'd consider, but can't you just get an external drive? They are around $75 for a 500 GB drive and you can just have it portable to use between the two computers. I save my images on the external drive and edit in any of the computers I use. The transfer is the USB port so just copy in windows onto the drive you are using. That way you always have everything together or not depending on the situation and you only need a USB cord.

I don't think laptops have their own auto cross over connections. Usually hubs/routers/switches will have them. If you want cheap, check with Craigslist. I'm sure people will be upgrading and giving away their old hubs/routers/switches. Also check with the person if they can spare 2 LAN cables for you to use. Otherwise, you can then buy a network cable at Walmart. They usually don't carry cross over cables. Best Buy, Radio Shack, Frys, CompUSA, or any other computer retail store should have x-over cables.

All Macs have auto-crossover ethernet ports. They have for about 4 years.
