but he said he has to give up the 70-200 first, what good would the 5d2 be without a nice lens?

Ah, ok. I thought it was $2.5k in addition to the lens, but of course it's the money from the sale of the lens..

Well, if that's the case and he finds 70mm to be too long on a crop for portraits that basically leaves the various 50 mm lenses.

Sell 7D
Sell 18-55

Buy 5D Classic
Buy 24-70/2.8

Keep 70-200/2.8 II.

Now you have two excellent lenses covering your from very wide (24mm) to tight portrait length (200mm) on a FF camera. This is an ideal setup as far as lenses and ranges on FF for the things you shoot.

This is outstanding advice. You WILL be pleased with what you gain by going full frame, unless you need to shoot faster, or rely heavily on precise auto focus with quickly moving subjects. The only way that staying with the 7D makes the most sense is if you shoot nature or sports, IMHO.

Why not buy a full frame camera?!?!?!? Get a 5Dmk2 and you will enjoy you 70-200 ALOT more! Keep the 18-55 on your 7D and the 70-200 on your 5Dmk2!!

This is exactly why I bought a 5D II and never regretted the decision. The 70-200 f2.8 IS (MK I or II) on full frame is a great portrait setup.
