I never knew portable vs unportable, I thought they were all the same, if I could get one for like $70 I would be happy, the cheaper the better, I just don't want to have to put it inside my tower :)

"Portable" versus "transportable." Neither requires installation into a PC or multi-drive enclosure, both should be hot-swappable. Portable requires no AC; transportable will need a "wall wart" or "brick" connected to AC.

One option is to get a hard drive docking station :)

Yup, that's similar to the one I use. It takes both 3.5" and 2.5" drives (very handy when upgrading the lappy drive - just plug the new one in and clone the old one to it). More important is that the docking station will work via USB (slow, slow sloooow) or eSATA (zippy, fast, zippy). I needed some data from an old WD Mybook yesterday and couldn't believe how long it took to tranfer a few hundred MB.

^ Yes, "transportable" is a more appropriate term or external desktop hard drives.

A desktop external hard drive requires a power plug making it ideal only for home use. They are usually bigger and use the standard 3.5" hard drives.

Portable external hard drives draws their power through the usb connection itself. They are usually smaller, uses 2.5" or 1.8" hard drives, and more expensive.

If you have an esata port, you can probably just plug in a drive there, back up your media and then store it off-site or in a fire safe.

Or you pick from others: http://www.techbargains.com/catsearch.cfm/0_11_3 (external link)

Or you can shop around or wait and keep checking TechBargains for future sales. There's a new sale posted on that site everyday :)
