Had my OC-E2 cord attached to my stroboframe FB and after a little accident, the shoe that the 580exII attached to (which is attached to the FB) broke (cracked it open enough to see wires).

I want to know if anyone has the newer OC-E3 cord and does it have metal componants vs. plastic on the OC-E2 cord?...or is there another brand that is more durable for Professional use.

the OC-E3 is definitely built better than it's predecessor. it's still mostly made of plastic, though. look here (external link) for a nice comparison with pics.

Heard good things about cords from FlashZebra.com.

The Canon ones are crap .. why a manufacturer continues to sell a product that won't support the weight of their flashes is beyond me. And when they break (and they will) it's a pretty good chance your flash will hit the floor.

I've been using a Yongnou OCC cord and it has not failed yet .. but I'm not too thrilled about it's construction either, about the same as the Canon version.

Someone needs to fill the void here and make one out of higher quality materials.

I have the canon oc-e3, YN clone, and the flashzebra version. They are virtually indistinguishable from the canon cord. All are solidly built and should be up to the task, unless you are using a heavy diffuser like the fong.

welcome to my world. I've been through 4 chords now 3 have failed, the last one was a Yongnou that failed where yours did the first time I slid the flash into the hot shoe adapter. Literally came apart in my hand.

I always thought this was a design feature - If you bump the flash while it's mounted on the OC-E3, the cord breaks rather than the foot of the flash.

I've never used the Canon original as I refuse to pay £50, but I keep a couple of the Yongnuo version in my bad and treat them as consumables. £11 each delivered from Hong Kong :)

I am using the Fong and was the night I pulled my 40D to the floor...it has had held up fine with the 580 EXII/Fong combo...nothing short of all metal parts will sustain a 4' drop from a table....just a stupid accident.

Over time the extra weight of the Fong, acting like a lever, tends to wear "spring" the hotshoe mounts slightly. Lots of complaints that the shoe (on the cord, or on the camera) tends to have intermittent communications issues.
