since we're on the topic, i was just curious, what are those lens caps that look like they have a ping-pong ball in the middle?

Do you mean a white balance cap?

Is anyone using this cap or can you suggest a better one?

I went with the Nikon caps after reading all of the reviews on B&H, one reviewer mentioned they have an extra thread compared to any aftermarket caps. They seem extremely well built as they should be for the premium price. My only concern is especially on ultra wide lens, would be the front element to cap clearance as the center of the center pinch caps have all of the guts in the middle, possible clearance problems? For that reason I haven't used a Nikon cap on my Canon 10-22mm lens.

I'm assuming people want the center-pinch caps for the ease of removing and replacing the lens cap when there is a hood on the lens. There's something else to be considered here...

If you're out shooting, replacing and removing the cap between shots is going to slow you down and eventually you're going to miss that once-in-a-lifetime shot because you couldn't get your cap off soon enough.

My lens caps are used only when the lenses are stored or being transported to a shoot. One I begin for the day, the caps are stashed somewhere (or a lot of times left at home) and they don't get replaced until I'm completely finished for the day.

Before anyone asks about potential damage to my lenses from not having the caps on, let me say that I have been doing it this way for over 30 years and have yet to have it be an issue.

I like them for the initial removal but once out and shooting the caps stay off so yeah, I could have stuck to the originals but being so cheap and Sigma's tend to fall of easily anyhow, I went with the center pinch.

I have some of the same (the 77mm version) and have no problems with them. My purpose for the center-pinch caps is to be able to apply and remove them while leaving the lens hoods mounted in the ready-to-use positions all the time.

Hi All,

I currently have an aftermarket lens cap for my 24-105 - mainly because I want to be able to take the cap on and off easily with the hood on and this cheapo lens cap from eBay allows me to do that easily as it has a center pinch mechanism.

However, I store my camera in its bag with the hood on backwards and the lens cap on. The only problem with the eBay lens cap is that the "lip" is slightly larger than the canon ones and the hood wont unscrew over the cap for me to then screw it back on the right way and then take the cap off.

My question is do any of the other branded center-pinch caps (Tamron, etc) allow you to unscrew the hood with the cap still on?

The reason is I hardly ever walk around with the camera just hung round my neck, etc, I always tend to take a shot or ten, then place the camera back in the messenger bag, scramble over rocks, etc, repeat. I also always want to sort the hood out first before the lens cap - I know I could just take the cap off first but to be honest, I don't want to. I'd rather have a center-inch cap that fits properly and lets me take the hood on and off with no trouble.

Any suggestions?

Cheers,
R

My Brno BaLens 77mm, it's the same diameter as the filter thread on the 24-105mm, so it doesn't snag the hood. But it's a very expensive option just for the convenience.
