They actually have a handful of digital medium format cameras for students to use; Haliburtons, or hasslehoffs, or something like that."

No. It's a very dim red LED, the light of which is aimed at a glass disc in the sights. You align the finder with your lens by aiming the lens at something in the distance then adjusting the finder until the red dot on the glass screen sits over the target.
