Ahem.

*refers to POTN nickname* ;)

Oh it won't get that far because, of course, you have not actually done anything illegal!! Taking photos in a public place is not against the law! ;)

Umm. I think you’ll find that the police think it is.

ok, so is there a link to the sync port or something so it turns OFF when you actually shoot, or will all your shots have a nice crosshair on the subject? lol

isn't this actually projecting a laser onto the "target" though? If not, why do you need anything more than a plastic ring?

No. It's a very dim red LED, the light of which is aimed at a glass disc in the sights. You align the finder with your lens by aiming the lens at something in the distance then adjusting the finder until the red dot on the glass screen sits over the target.

When properly aligned you can aim your lens at a target by placing the red dot. In astronomy this is very handy as it can be quite difficult to point the lens at a particular spot in the sky.

See this is what I don't get either. If we can see the dot on them then so can the lens surely?

Edit: - Someone just posted explanation above. I still don't understand it mind.:o

It is exactly like the AF points in your camera's viewfinder. Only difference is that bullets require more precision to hit than an AF point.

You could do the same with a plain plastic ring but that would be like shooting through a viewfinder with no AF points so you'd be guess where the camera will focus.

I guess this could work okay if you are shooting BIF and have zeroed the sight so that the aiming point indicates the same position as the center AF point at whatever distance you normally are from the birds. These sights are the rangefinder cameras of the shooting world, allowing the user to keep both eyes open while quickly composing and shooting.

An ordinary gun sight has a pair of cross-hairs in a tube - yeah? When it's aligned properly you stick the cross-hairs on the target, pull the trigger and hit the target. This works the same way, but cross hairs are difficult to see when you're pointing at the night sky, so the light of a red LED is reflected from a partially mirrored glass lens so that it shines back towards you.
