I can't remember, did I shoot 1567 times or 1568, so, you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya punk?”

Umm. I think you’ll find that the police think it is.

Luckily, what the police think is illegal is irrelevant. Fact of the matter is that it isn't. If individual officers decide to ignore the guidance of ACPO, their Chief Constables and the Home Office, and insist on initiating wrongful arrest then so be it. They can talk to your lawyers! ;)

But you'll be sitting in stir until such time as your lawyer, or saner minds in the higher echelons of the force, convince the arresting officer that he made that big mistake. Sorry, not worth it.

In any case, if I'm understanding this, it's more like a reflecting gunsight or HUD as used in fighter/attack aircraft than a laser indicator used on a handgun or rifle. The red dot's on the front screen of the aux. viewfinder, not on your subject. Thus, you won't be giving (most) LEOs a conniption.

Lot of 'ifs' in there before that happens Jon! ;)

Based on what I've been seeing about Metropolitan London Police, it's not "if" but "when".

I'm not sure where you are getting your information from, but to my knowledge there has only been one photographer arrested after a section 44 stop and search, and that was for breach of the peace.

The facts are that photography in a public place is legal here. Most police are very reasonable. There have been some high profile stop and search activities (considered illegal by the EU), but these have all been resolved without arrest. In the accompanying bad publicity for the police the rights of photographers are re-asserted.

Well, illegal stops or not, bad publicity doesn't seem to bother them any:

I really don't think something like this would attract attention from anybody. It isn't a laser pointer...the dot is illuminated on the glass of the sight. This isn't a full size scope that screams "weapon" either. I doubt anyone would really even notice this - they'll be too busy gawking at the size of the lens you have.

If you have a telephoto on you body mounted to the BushHawk stock, then yes, you're holding it like a weapon, and will probably attract at least a second look, but not with this tiny little red dot sight. I think it'd be ideal for a lot of stuff.

I've seen a lot of ridiculing on ideas like this and the BushHawk. The truth is, they're taking technology/ideas used in firearms, which require a great deal of precision and steadiness, and applying it to photography. I, for one, think it's pretty cool.

I would think that on a camera, say a 7D mounted on a bushawk stock with a 400/500mm lens it , or something similar would be very useful for BIF. Unfortunately in the UK if you took it out to get a duck shot in the local park you would probably find yourself spreadeagled on the ground with a 9mm H&K stuck in your ear

Evan has it right. These sights are generally very small. On any camera rig big enough to be used for birding the sight won't be noticeable at all.

The buskhawk-type stocks are another story. A while back I was standing next to a guy using one with a 7D and 400/5.6. Every time I would glimpse him in my peripheral vision my mind would scream "gun."

I was thinking the same thing, minus the Bushawk stock, I think that's sort of silly

But for Birds in Flight when you can lose the bird in a matter of seconds and have to pull your eye away from the eyepiece to see where it is, this could allow you to still keep firing as long as you have the two dots squared together

Actually, I wish I'd had the red-dot sight on this morning. I was shooting at 600mm and trying to get onto a Nightingale in a large tree. Finally found it, but the sight would have made it a lot easier.
