If that's what it looks like manually focused, then you've probably got an element out of alignment (probably from a drop) and the lens needs to be sent to Canon. Though your shutter speeds do leave a little bit to be desired for handholding.

After 4000+ posts, I'm sure you've seen how some people want to help so badly that they don't bother reading the whole thread. <shrug>

Anyway, I hope the OP can get the lens serviced by Canon under warranty. Maybe then we will find out what the real problem was.

Some of us already knew it was not the filter back on page 1.

I agree and I hope he(OP) comes back to this thread and lets us know what was wrong.

There are a lot of threads on this forum that show user error. IMO that's one unhappy lens that needs some attention.

I will certainly do that. The lens is being mailed today. Hoping for a quick turnaround because I live in NJ (where the lens is being shipped to). I burned a CD with the images I posted below so it will be easier for them to understand the problem.

Stay tuned...

Just got confirmation from the USPS that the item was delivered an impressive 21 hours after I mailed it. Hoping to get a quick response from Canon as well.

I don't have first-hand experience (yet), but from all the stories I've read, you will.

Got the repair estimate. $95 for labor + tax + shipping = $119

Since I approved it I assume this means that now they can actually open the lens up to see the problem.

When they send it back to me, will they provide a detailed explanation of the problem and what was done to rectify it?

Not bad for repairs, but i'm thinking you could have bought a new one for what you're going to have in it.

I haven't sent in a lens to canon before but you honestly should have taken this up with eBay before trying to get it repaired. Probably would have spent a good $15-20 on shipping anyway but no way should it have been ok that you received a bad lens unless he stated it was bad.

Either way, Canon will fix it up nicely. I know people that have had to send in things for repair and they're nice and quick and do a great job.

I don't know if it's too late to change your ebay feedback for the seller, but I would definitely try. Seller had to know it was defective, unless it damaged during shipping. It would have to be packaged terribly and there would likely be damage to the shipping box.

I have already communicated with the seller. He was genuinely concerned about my issue. He contends that he had taken many test shots at all apertures and FLs before shipping and has shots to prove them. He also said it was not a fair request for me to request a return/refund three weeks after having received it. I know I would have said the same if I was in his position. I guess I have to see what the issue actually ends up being before determining who to blame. Like you said, it could have been damaged during shipping, though that seems like a slim possibility.

Lesson learned: always test a lens out at all f-stops and FLs before determining you got a working lens.
