I decided to go out and take some flower shots today. I haven't done many of these in the past and it is still relatively new to me. All of these were taken with my 7D and 28 - 135mm and all natural lighting. Please critique these harshly, I can take it.

Too much contrast for me. Blacks are nice but the first two are still a bit underexposed for my taste. Last one's flowers are overexposed.

I agree with the above comments regarding exposure. If shot in Raw use highlights/shadows bar and see if it can't be salvaged somewhat.

Composition on the first is slightly distracting with the 'bouquet' which is cut off on the left hand side. Personally, a black background works to isolate the subject, and so create a focal point, the first one is too busy for a black background in my opinion, if you had just the the pinks/purples it might work but add in the greens and I feel like it doesn't.

There's a flatness to the second picture due to the 2 foremost flowers being in one plane. I like the one flower angled away in the background. I think that a more evocative shot could be made by taking the angled flower + buds. Try to find interesting angles to create dynamism, if it's flat it comes across as...well...flat.

Last photo point of interest is on the butterfly so you might consider cropping to only the flowers and butterfly. There's a lack of detail on the flowers. To make this work I feel like there needs to be more vibrancy and colour. It has a bleached out feel to it.

Hope this helps.
