Is there a way to use the IR from the flash and not fire the flash? Basically, I want to use in to active autofocus, but not fire it when taking the picture using a 7D?

Just set it up in the custom functions. The infrared section of your flash will emit vertical and horizontal red lines to assist in auto-focusing. Hello, my name is Victor.
