I don't have a true remote though I do have a micro-mini plug with two wires that I can touch together and fire my shutter, BUT I never use it, if I feel a remote I use the self timer.

Tripod+remote here. Wouldn't think of using one without the other.

Yup.. I use the remote. In my case, my 30 yr old tripod is not steady enough to hold the camera steady if I am pressing the shutter. I had bought a cheap cable release from amazon... it worked well for about 2 weeks. One of the Canon cable releases is on my wish list, but with the inexpensive remote working so well, the cable release is a lower priority for me right now.

When I shoot team portraits I use the remote as I can see the players faces much better. This gives me the opportunity to scan for eyes and faces before I click the shutter. Helps a lot and reduces the I think everyone was looking by abut 80%.

On the tripod I use my remote often, if I am not using my remote I use the 2 second timer.

what camera do you use?

What remote model do you use ? I have the 7D. I can't believe the dam remote tool on Canon website cost $600 bucks.

I use the 7D and the (discontinued) Canon RC-1 Wireless Remote Controller (external link) which works fine.

I had purchased one of the cheap cable releases from Amazon (maybe this one) (external link). It worked great for about 3 outings.. then the half press started to fail.. then it just got completely flaky; so I stopped using it.

This is the Canon Cable Release (external link) I want.. but it is expensive.

timer and MLU for landscape, etc.

Absolutely agree. Self timer all the way.

The only thing I use my remote for is trying to capture skittish birds or insects, (hummingbirds or butterflies)

This (external link)one will work. Very reasonably priced too. I use it with my 50D and it works perfectly.

I bought myself one recenly and as I do a lot of macro work I'd say its a godsend! Previously I would have to use the self timer which is limited to 10 seconds by default on the 10D. To get 2 seconds you have to go into Custom Functions and set Mirror Up. (They really should have put that as a seperate button!) Now I have the remote I can breathe easier!

You ain't kidding. That was one of the best features of my Pentax 67II. There was a separate switch on the body itself just for MLU.

Its vital I'd say. Also of use would be the ability to choose between 2 and 10 seconds for the self timer, like I can do on my Panasonic FZ7. They could have made the Quick snap button or whatever its called more assignable and have that as one of its options.
