I use one all the time. Only way to take shots longer than 30 seconds, so it's usually a requirement for me.

I use an RC-1, which is actually attached to my camera strap, so it's with me whenever I need it.

When I shoot team portraits I use the remote as I can see the players faces much better. This gives me the opportunity to scan for eyes and faces before I click the shutter. Helps a lot and reduces the I think everyone was looking by abut 80%.

I do this frequently. I've bought a couple of very inexpensive radio remotes from eBay ($17.00 USD direct from China) which are the same as this model from B&H:

I use it on a tripod constantly for group and children portraits. With small children, I find this method to be an absolute wonder. Children depend very heavily on seeing a person's face to communicate, and that is diminished when the photographer's face is behind the camera.

I put the camera on a tripod, attach the remote control, focus the camera on a spot and then put the child on it. I then get as close to the child as possible, just outside the camera's view. Communicating with the child at close range without the camera between us helps me get much more out of the child and even rivets the child more successfully in one spot.

This helps as well with pets.

For $17 bucks, it was a no-brainer. The first one worked so well I bought a second.
