Hey Guys-
I had the PLEASURE of borrowing a friends 100mm f2.8L IS USM macro lens for a wedding this past weekend and I think I may be hooked! I don't do A TON of macro shots, but feel like it would really compliment my arsenal of lenses, the question is, where to start? I'm not sure what's amazing, what's over the top, and what's junk. So far here is what I am considering, my main body is a 1dmk2 so not sure if there are compatibility issues or not, but figured i'd throw that out there. Product shots, ring shots, and just having fun would be primary use.

canon 50mm f2.5 $265
sigma 50mm f2.8 $300
canon 60mm f2.8 $400 (will this work on a 1dmk2?)
canon 100mm f2.8 $520

obviously i'm looking at something I can have fun with, enjoy, but not break my bank. the 50 and 60 are more appealing since my other main lesnes are 17-40 and 70-200, yet the 100mm (focal length) was really a pleasure to use.

Anyway, if you guys could shed some light, i'd really appreciate it! Thanks!

100mm gives you more working distance. It's an all around lens, very sharp, great price. I moved from it to the new IS L so I could have IS, else the non IS was/is one of the best bang for buck lenses out there.

Would you like to buy a vowel?
Go ahead, spin the wheel.

Nice thing about macro lenses from the major manufacturers is that it is virtually impossible to by a lemon - they are all very sharp. may vary in build quality and AF speed but most macro shooters use MF anyway.
I'm using a Tamron90 mm ATM and that's fine. Don't think the canon 60 will work with a IDmk2 unless you use a 12mm ext tube with it.

what were you hand holding with the non IS, 1/60? seeing how i've only used the IS for just a quick minute (and was very impressed about everything the lens is) what would you say the main diff. between the L and non L would be?

also : would you guys trust a tokina, tamron, or sigma, or stick with canon?
