So I am just getting into macro using the kenko tubes and non-macro lenses (mainly my tamron 18-270 and my 24-105L).

My results are getting better and I have learnt alot by reading the FAQs and the posts here by you experts. So thanks alot for that.

I am relatively happy with my recent shots, eg

IMAGE: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4046/4612589386_55d8573965_b.jpg

but i can see that they are nowhere near the incredible quality of some of the contributors here. The one above was with 50mm kenko tube on the tammy with natural light (overcast but bright i think).

My question is simple, if you had to pick one area to get an improvement in results, what would it be?

Obvious candidates are

1. Proper macro lens
2. Proper macro flash
3. Skills of photographer

Any advice or CC of the photo appreciated.

#3 will always help and never interfere
:)
#2 - the lighting could use some modulation. If you look at the rigs that people have here, many get excellent results without the "macro flashes" I don't think your money should go there first.
#1 - always good, but again, work on #3, and then #1...not the other way around.

unless you have the money.... :)

Actually rather like the shot.
It's much more difficult to get sharp looking shots with nice natural light like this. You tend to be shooting fairly wide open for a start giving narrow DOF and even at 1/250th you will possibly get either camera or subject movement blur when shooting handheld.
I'd just practice all you can and perhaps think about getting a flash.

ok thx i will keep practicing for now. i have already improved and i have only had a few sessions so i thought the dufus behind the lens would be the main factor :)

i think that was 1/250 and wide open for that lens = f6.3 at ISO 1600. I don't think I could go any faster without getting noise issues or having some lighting help.

is there any point in using a regular flash unit with a stofen or whatever?
