Hi all,

I'm considering to buy a Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4 OS HSM lens for my new 550D, but I read about focusing problems. I know there's always a chance to get a bad copy, but how big is that chance with the Sigma?

Just buy from Adorama/BH and if there are any focus issues just call them and get it replaced with a new one if there are any focus issues!

I mean, Sigma does seem to have some quality issues, but they DO offer a 4-year warranty if anything should go wrong. That warranty is excellent!

Not to mention, if you buy from a good online store such as B&H or Adorama... If it does not focus correctly just call and let them know. They will take it back. Not everybody has the luxury of microadjust!

Go for it! Buy it and don't worry about the focus! If it is not right, they will take care of you.

with all of these issues with bad focusing/ images being soft, those can all be fixed by the manufacturer right? It's not an issues of just building a bad lens, it's just more of a callibration issue (assuming nothing is broken in the lens itself)

Yes they can.

The problem with Sigma is, lack of quality control. The lenses are not carefully calibrated before being shipped out so many end up going back for focus issues. If you send it to them they will carefully recalibrate and usually come back spot on.

Now, why they don't strive for this right of the factory is beyond me... But, it's their business, not mine :p
