tetrode, i'm also interested in your results. i don't have jerry's adapter so i use my PCB speedring on my 69" rotolux octo. if this works i'll have to contact jerry to order one. i'm still waiting on einsteins so i'm using the older AB strobe

WHY? (sorry to shout.)

While I understand your curiousity about the einsteins....what on earth makes you want to do all this just to use some einsteins? What are the Elinchrom's not giving you that you've found in the Einsteins? Sure there are feature differences, but what you found advantageous?

certainly not bashing your experimentation or telling you what to think....but I must admit I'm confused by all this.

Not sure why you would confused, Jeff
Eli Octa's are well known for being a great modifier. With the new Einstein's many folks are getting them because of wealth of new features. Who would sell their Rotalux or Octabank on Ebay and get a 47" Buff Octa?

There are guys using Speedo dishes on Elinchrom.... They are using buff boxes on their Bowens. This is just a innovative modification to use a new flash system on a large box with a proprietary mounting ring.

You realize, you all are missing the true genious in all of this, don't you?

The word "ElinStein" bw!

But seriously can't you just replace the Eli speedring, or even just cut it down and bolt a PCB fitting plate to it?

Get out to your garage, get some power tools and show it who's boss!

I think if I actually had a spare modifier I would attempt to modify it so I would be able to mount it on without the adapter.

I think you misunderstood what I meant by my post, Jerry. I think the fact that you offer an ability for AB/Einstein/other users to use Elinchrom modifiers makes complete and utter sense....and frankly I, and many other photographers, thank you for pushing forward in your innovations and projects. I've bought a wide variety of things from you, and they're all truly great.

What confused me is why dave, someone who already owns nice elinchrom lights, would ever want to go through all this effort to use the einsteins.

Truth is, Jeff, Dave isn't always rational or practical when it comes to the acqusition of new toys. I own both Canons and Nikons (as well as a Jeep and a Mini Cooper) so why not multiple brands of lights? The lure of small, lightweight, remotely controllable, quasi-Elinchrom compatible, and affordable (plus the bonus incentive of an additional 10% off for us ABMax veterans) was enough to convince me to give the Einsteins a try. I'm not sure if I'll keep them (there are some major teething pains with the Cyber Commander) but, for now, I'm having fun playing with them and exploring their formidable capbilities.

All of this skepticism and doubt for this combo is really disappointing.

1) There's no reason to say "Stick with Eli" or "Why on earth would you do that?!" He simply wants to use the new features of the Einstein with his Octabox. He's not going to go buy a whole new lighting rig just so the flash tube is perfectly aligned in his octo.

2) So what if the flash tube is recessed. Will it cause an un-eveness in light? Maybe. Will it cause a hot spot? Maybe...but so what. Some of you may not be able to live with a hot spot, but I for one welcome it.

Joey L removes the inner baffle from his boxes so that he can get the hot spot. Joel Grimes even goes as far as rigging it so he can control where the hot spot is in the box. You guys talk about so many technicalities and are obsessed with finding out what the F stop value is on one side as opposed to the other, when you really could be saying "hey, we have this light, what can we do with it?"

As for the mods, I think they're great. I think it's awesome that Kacey puts out a product that allows us to fit different brands together. Makes our world a lot more versatile and a funner place to live in.

Can't wait to see some shots done with that setup!

I think that for many of us that questioned Dave's decision (we know Dave so this was not a random bash or attack) were wondering why he would buy Einstein's (or any other lights) when he already had a set of Elinchrom 600RX's.

If he didn't own any strobes we'd be more likely to cheer him on and be more curious about the lights than his decision.

Spare us the pop psychology...

Rob has it spot-on.

cheers, juice (Canon shooter, Elinchrom lighter, but pretty much agnostic on brands.)
