That is a beautiful Dog, she must have a nice personality.....
Just my 2 cents, try to bring out bit more texture in her fur or soft HDR

Great looking dog and nice expression on her face. I think this image would be better with a more defocused background (less DoF). You could do this in PhotoShop.

Harsh shadow on the body is distracting.
Something feels off with the way the shot's framed. Perhaps a full body frame would work much better.
And what the others said.

First of all, may I say you have a beautiful dog! Now, on to the few things I noticed . . .

She's looking into the sun. It makes her squint, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's just personal preference that I would try to avoid this. It also makes that awkward shadow that only covers part of her backside, which is kind of distracting.

The composition seems a little off. At the very least I think having less open space at the top of the frame and more of her body at the bottom would have benefited the shot greatly. In the future, you might also want to play around more and get away from shots where she is so centered. As it is it's a nice photo to show off your lovely dog but it's just not that interesting visually.

All right - Thanks for the comments. So for shots like this I should:

Open up the aperture more (I usually do this and love the effect)
Definitely recompose - I was thinking a whole body shot would be nicer too and fill the frame with her
The shadow - would you use some fill flash in this situation?
And perhaps reposition her so she is not squinting

It all makes good sense to me and gives me some ideas.

Thanks - jriley

Lovely dog. For me the shadow and squint is noticeable. However, you've managed to get the nose and eyes in focus which is the main thing. If he/she were mine and patient enough, I'd try a full body shot at ground level pointing slightly upwards to try and get a sky background.

Beautiful dog!

In my opinion, you should darken the background a bit in a photo editing software, the hue of the shepherd and the green in the background is very similar and makes the dog disappear.
But other than that, lovely shot!
