I've only used black a couple of times when flagging light to the side of the subject but there have been many times I've needed to throw a black sheet (cheapest king size flat bed sheets I could find) over the ground or floor to prevent sunlight from reflecting off the ground. Concrete can be really bad about this since it has such a cool grey color cast.
