I recently purchased this kit: http://www.amazon.com …ics&qid=1274215091&sr=8-1 (external link)

Oddly, it did not come with an adapter ring. Is there a reason for that? Do some people prefer to forego the ring? If so, it seems like something of a hassle -- or maybe it's quicker? It just seems awkward to hold it with my hand, but maybe that's what a lot of people do?

I have little experience with landscape photography and don't plan to make it a big part of my hobby, but with all the beautiful NH mountains (and white skies), there are times that I know it will come in very handy.

I just wondered if an adapter ring is a must-have.

The size of the adapter ring depends on the lens. Impossible for the manufacturer to predict what lens diameter adapter will be needed.

Luckily Canon seem to major on 77mm which is handy.

That makes sense. Dumb Q -- my 18-55 IS says 58mm on the front of the lens -- is that the size I look for then? (My 50 mm 1.8 says 52.)

Kristin,

Yes, 58mm is the filter size for the 18-55. I had to have a quick peep at the lens tables sticky before I put my foot in my mouth.
