after lusted and owning this lens for about 5 months, i feel that i dont use it as much as i should. i have a full set of prime that covers the range of 24-70. what i want to know is if i should sell the 24-70 and get a 24-105 or trade it for a 70-200L or even trade it for a 5Dc to have a 2nd body?

my prime set are 28 1.8, sig 50 1.4, 85 1.8, 100 2.8. ive been using the 28 and 50 a lot more. ive been juggling the idea back and forth whether to keep the 24-70 because i know its a great lens but i just feel bad that it sits in my bag at home or should i sell it since i have the primes and get a 70-200 telezoom for my longer range?

my ideas are:
1. trade 24-70 for 24-105 + cash
2. straight trade 24-70 for 70-200 2.8nonIS/ f4IS
3. straight trade for a 5Dc
4. selling it outright and put it towards my saving for a 5Dii.

i am trying to build my kit towards wedding, portrait, head shots, models, and childrens.

let me know what are your thoughts.

I think you should donate your 24-70 to me :D:D:D

I need that lens to shoot my first wedding.

I dont know that I would want to do weddings without a zoom in that range. Primes are great, but the zoom is so much more practical for receptions and event work. The 24-105 might be a decent substitute and would pick you up a bit of cash for future upgrades elsewhere, but I dont know that I would do that.

yea i understands..its the only reason why im still holding on to it. so a zoom in the 24-70 range is more important than a 70-200?

Well, if you can survive without it, then definitely you can start saving for 5D MKII as you already got a nice collection of primes.

Do you ever cover events? If you have, then obviously you prefer primes, so just sell it.

If you want to get into portraiture, get a 70-200, or at least a prime longer than 100mm. A 100mm on a 1D is about as short as you can get for headshots, and you might want more working distance, which means a longer lens.

a 5dii would be pretty nice with primes.

i have done events before. but why would events be anymore different than a wedding?

a 100mm on 1d is about as long as 135mm on FF.

The most overrated lens I've owned.

That's my point. If you've done events and left the 24-70 in the bag, then you have no reason worry about primes vs zoom for wedding work.

a 100mm on 1d is about as long as 135mm on FF.

Yes, but what if you want more working distance? 135mm is the minimum, not necessarily the norm.

Agreed.

If you aren't using it, don't feel like you need to have it.

thanks all!

@timnosenzo: since you're a wedding photog, do you feel the 'need' to have this lens for your events?

I don't, but everyone is different. I use 2 bodies during the day, with a prime on each. It's an easier setup for me, and I prefer having the smaller, faster lenses than a bigger, slower zoom.
