please dont shake head at me but...focus under the thumb ?

Instead of having the camera focus when the shutter button is half-pressed, I have a custom function enabled to switch focus to the * button which is under my thumb.

There's a whole thread about it which I'll link to once I find it.

Back Button Focus...

Either using the AF ON button if your camera has one or else setting custom function to use the * button for AF.

(Why isn't the Back Button Focus thread a sticky under EOS Cameras?)

I think this is the thread.

I've been having a hard time finding threads too :o I should probably get some more sleep to fix that

I absolutely love backbutton AF. Confuses the heck out of people not used to it. I handed my camera to a fellow shooter and he handed it back saying "something's wrong, it won't AF!"

This is why i love this place, thanks fellas!

I did change a few things around on the 7D menu, i think this will be handy with my grip, it tends to fire off a few without focus first!

Both AF and IS (especially IS) need "a beat" to get dialed in for fullest effect. Many think IS is instantaneous and it definately isn't...

I usually switch it to greenbox mode... and tell them to wear the neckstrap.

my camera is actually with my gf right now for over a week already...:( I lend it to her coz I will be giving it to her this coming year end in time for my upgrade/switch and she is pretty much excited about it.

People tend not to volunteer to use my camera. But when they do, I usually end up saying "hold it with your left hand under the lens". As they try to use my MkIII with 70-200/2.8 holding the body with both hands.

Noted: I Know when my Is kicks in on the F4 70-200, the image in the eye piece jolts for a nano second!

Ill set that up tonight, give it a whirl, will be really handy when using the grip!

I also always say LOOK into the viewfinder.... as people holds the camera as if they are holding a P&S.

You should feel the IS on the 300 f/2.8 and 500 f/4. Feels like it wants to torque right out of your hand!

I have noticed that in Mode 2 its feels like its rotating twice as fast as Mode 1! I would of thought that mode 1 would work harder as its rotating 2 directions?

It depends. If they have an attitude about how easy it is to push a button, I switch it to M and MF and hand over. I usually place the strap around their neck myself, lol.

If they're nice and I'm offering a try, then I'll through it into Av or some other auto-ish mode (my camera doesn't have a green box) and let them try it. The back button focus take a minute or two to get used to.
