It depends. If they have an attitude about how easy it is to push a button, I switch it to M and MF and hand over. I usually place the strap around their neck myself, lol.

If they're nice and I'm offering a try, then I'll through it into Av or some other auto-ish mode (my camera doesn't have a green box) and let them try it. The back button focus take a minute or two to get used to.

Cruel but i like it!bw!

Yeah, that happens to me. "Erm, that's not a zoom control..."

Yes. It's funny that when people can't get all of their shot in frame, they forget they can step back.

Before they even get close to the camera, my first words are "It's really heavy."

Its funny how we get used to big cameras. I could hand a 5D with 50/1.4 to my mom and she'd say how big and heavy it is. It feels like a P&S to me.

For me, It's to tell them to keep the subject off-center.

If I care about the shot, I'll actually choose the center AF point and tell them to keep the subject (presumably me) in the center. One less thing to go wrong.

If I don't care too much, I stick it on to Green Box or CA if I think there may be a chance I'd want the shot in RAW.

LOL at the back button focus! I am so glad that I tried this setting once because I would have never known what I was missing out on. I have to agree, though, that this is the first thing I've told to the four people that have ever held my camera.

1. My niece (who has her own DSLR and knows how to handle it)
2. My brother-in-law (who is 6'5" and 300lbs., so I don't argue with him)
3. My wife (who I trust with anything of mine)
4. My brother (who is just like my wife, only not as sexy!) ;)

Click til you get the red dot in the middle, then click when what you want is in the middle. Keep it on P. ALways keep it around your neck. Dont constantly turn it off. Dont put your fingers on the lens, dont press the lens release button ever.

I work at the visitor center in roswell nm and there is a back drop and alien manicans. We offer to take pics of them and their family not one who had their camera hesitated. I seen and handle all kinds of cameras to cheap ones to expensive ones. The expensive ones I don't like to handle because anything can happen and I know if I allowed someone to handle my expensive camera and they broke it I would feel aweful for one I allowed it and two I would have to wait another year to get me another. If someone is going top take my pic with my camera I would let them use one of my traveling size ones
