Why should you shoot RAW?
It's what all the cool photographers are doing.

Hey! Get your own material man!! :D:p

(It's true though. You'll get more friends if you shoot RAW).

You don't need to shoot RAW at all. If Jpeg floats your boat then carry on with it. Working with a large Jpeg is OK. You can always very easily make a a copy and work on that.

Since I've been using a DSLR I've shot RAW mainly because I was advised to from the outset. Having read all the above posts I'm going to shoot Jpegs for a month and see for real what the difference is.

Great post, provoked a lot of good replies.

Paul

If silvrr's post doesn't convince you as to why shoot RAW, nothing will.

That is one huge difference which as shown would be impossible in Jpeg. You might not need that scope all the time but its great to have it there if you need it.

First off, your camera ONLY shoots RAW. When you select JPG, the camera takes the RAW data and pipes it into its on-board JPG processor to generate the JPG "image" to save to the card.

When you shoot RAW, the RAW "data" goes directly to the card and is not an image.

To generate an image, you use a RAW processor (software on your PC) which turns the data into a viewable image, much like the camera's JPG processor. The difference is that YOU have complete control over the image generation process. You can change the white balance, adjust the contrast/brightness/black point/etc....

So you can leave these decisions up to the camera's little processor (and hope it makes the right decisions since they are irreversible), or save the decisions for later where YOU have complete control over it.

I've never used RAW, the reason being I've always associated it with getting the utmost quality for printing, and I don't do prints. I realise that that's not the whole story but well, I need convincing. I only have a 1GB card and at the moment in JPG Large I get loads of pics before its full, but that will go down drastically if set to RAW. So come on guys, I need convincing- sell me RAW! :p

I don't care what you shoot I shoot raw for control. I gives me more control over my final image. Cards are cheap now and all you have is one 1Gb card?

Hmmm....

I must be doing something wrong then. Ever since I started shooting RAW I spend all my time PP files and now I have fewer friends.

Yes because that came with the camera when the guy kindly sent it to me. I'm hardly gonna complain to the guy!
Why do some people insist on judging others, presuming everyone has monet to spend willy nilly! At the moment £10 must be spent wisely never mind £100. We don't all have high flying jobs,we aren't all single with no responsibilities!

Having more than one 1Gb card isn't spending money willy nilly. ;)
