B & H has two apparently different sets of deflectors but neither have dimensions or compatibility charts. Anyone know which one is most suited for use with the deep throat?

Can the same deflector be used with the 53" octa?

(already spent considerable time with search engine...):(

Hi Chris,

Both the mini and maxi deflectors can be used in any modifier. There is no compatibility chart because it's all about preferred quality of light. The size of the deflector and distance from the flash tube will affect the quality of light.

Based on experience with both size deflectors and an assortment of Elinchrom and non-Elinchrom modifiers I would suggest the large (maxi) deflector. I never use the gold and it's a shame you have to buy the silver and gold together.

If you like, I can post some images that show the differences between the mini and maxi deflector when used with the 39"Deep Octa.

That would be great for me too if you wouldn't mind :)

Thank you very much Rob. And yes, some images showing the difference between the mini and maxi deflectors would be very very interesting to see.
Chris

EDIT: geez, the maxi is 7-14 days from B & H & out of stock at Adorama. I shoot in eight days

I'll have some images posted by tomorrow evening. Sorry for the delay. I had a crazy day of shooting and editing.

I don't have comparison shots from this shoot but just as a reference, this shot was done with the 39" Deep Octa with maxi deflector and no inner or outer diffusion panel. It's absolutely beautiful light when used this way.

OK, I had some time to do sample shots.

This is my setup.

Black seamless background. Subject is 4 feet from background. Deep Octa is approximately 45 degrees off axis, raised up, angled down with the center feathered across the subject at about 4 feet from the subject.

I've also included shots with the diffusion panels so you can see the difference between using deflectors and using diffusion material. Each configuration has it's own unique look and especially in the shadow edge and transitions between diffuse and shadow and specular (highlight) to diffuse.

Exposure is the same, metered in the exact same place, and using the same aperture so shadow depth is compared at the same depth of field.

Here are the individual shots and then a cropped comparison to show shadows and transitions. The two places that really show the nuances of shadows are the primary and secondary shadow that are coming off the nose and the shadow that crosses diagonally down the neck. I didn't do a tight comparison of the hot spot on the forehead but you'll see a similar smoothing out of the specular to the diffuse and ultimately a much more controlled highlight without the use of any other modifiers, scrims, etc.

Hey Paul,

That's my second favorite configuration. Very nice light.

Wow, what a lot of unexpected and enormously helpful effort you've made here! Thank you very much. I'm going to have to go with the maxi deflector. Great light on your real model BTW.
Chris

EDIT: What was the distance between the flash tube and reflector?
