Wow, what a lot of unexpected and enormously helpful effort you've made here! Thank you very much. I'm going to have to go with the maxi deflector. Great light on your real model BTW.
Chris

EDIT: What was the distance between the flash tube and reflector?

My pleasure Chris, and thanks.

When I use the deflectors in the 39" Deep Octa or the 53" Octa I place the deflector about 3 inches from the flat part of the speed ring which incidentally with Elinchrom modifiers with the proprietary Elinchrom speedring the front of the flash tube is just about flush with the front surface of the speed ring.

So, when comparing non-Elinchrom items that are modded or converted that's a point of reference in terms of what would be considered the 'correct' placement of the flash tube.

Oh yes, one last thing about deflectors....

If you want to accomplish the same thing with strip boxes as with an octa or standard softbox then use a deflector and watch your strip boxes get a bit zippier. :D

I really enjoy edge lighting but if there's a giant hot spot in the strip it can make placement of the edge lights problematic. I also love using a large strip as a main light modifier, knocking down the hot spot and getting more even distribution from center to the short edge.

Deflector good!

OK, I had some time to do sample shots.

Thanks Robert, that's great.
