My wife and I both shoot photos on our trips. We just returned from 3 weeks in China. Current equipment is
10D, 20D, 16-35L, 24-70L, 100-400 IS L and a 1.4 extender.
We also have a 3 film bodies, a few primes and lower level zooms that are gathering dust.

The next serious trip will be summer 2011 but there will be plenty of photo opps in the meantime. Are we really missing anything by continuing to use the 10D and 20D bodies? If an upgrade is in order, I would probably be looking at a 5D MKII and a 7D. Is this overkill?

Also, should we be looking at updating the glass? The 100-400 IS L is from 2000. The other L lenses are from around 2003.

How much do you want to spend? Do your current camera bodies limit what you believe you can get out of your photography (for example, focus too slow, continuous shooting too slow, too much noise at high-ISOs, no video, file resolution too small for poster-size enlargements, or whatever)?

Some Canon stuff and a little bit of Yongnuo.

Well, I like the idea of the 5D for the full frame sensor. I used to use my EOS 3 for wide angle shots, the 10D and 20D both digitally crop the view.
With more pixels, I suspect that we can do more cropping and still get a nice quality larger print.
Shooting HD video also sounds like a nice touch. No more lugging around a camcorder.

My wife likes to shoot wild life photos so a faster shooting speed would be nice. I usually have the 24-70L mounted.

I owned a 7D when they first came out, get one for sure. I only sold mine, cause I wanted a 1D Mk3 more and the prices came down right after I got the 7D. But that camera is Superior, all new tech, and better than any XXD body.

Boy, you'd be more than set with the two bodies you have your eye on. Unless serious sports shooting is a priority, maybe even a pair of the 5Dii bodies. You have really nice lenses already if capturing your travels is the main area of interest.

We're getting the 100-400 and the 24-70 cleaned this week. This will cost about $50 each. I was looking on Ebay and see there are deals to be had on both the 7D and the 5DmkII.
I've seen some posts referring buying through ebay and using Bing to get discounts. If someone has a link to the procedure, I would appreciate it.
I see that there are some Japanese spec bodys on EBay - should I avoid these and just go with US spec?

My wife just informed me that her body is a 40D.

This means we currently have a 10D and a 40D body. The question stands, should I replace the 10D now with that 7D or a 5D mk II?

Depends what you shoot? If you shoot a lot of moving targets then a 7D with its high FPS and focus system would be more of the filling. If superior iso performance and IQ is what you want then go for the 5DII (One day ill own that beast :D).

Get a 50D because I have one. :p

Seriously, I wouldn't know what works for yall. You have good glass allready, buy what you really want and aim as high as you can. Some may say cameras are a tool, but I think as them as expensive toys to be fondled. I wouldn't think of driving a 16 penny nail with my 50D.

I would definitely go with a 5dII. The 10D is really getting to be old tech and the newer generations will have definite advantages in terms of ISO capability and autofocus improvements. Unless you shoot alot of fast moving subjects then I think the 5dII would serve well. If you want to add some glass, the new 70-200 2.8 IS mkII sems to be a stunning lens. So good that pairing it with a 1.4tc still gives great results.

You are correct, the 10D is pretty old tech. My wife suggests converting it to infrared but I don't see a whole lot of use for that. I still like the images it produces with the 24-70 but I know that it is old.
While I lust for the 5D or 1D, you can see by my previous purchases that I tend to buy good glass and OK bodies.
The tech of the bodies improves so rapidly while lens tech advances at a snails pace.
I don't need super fast. We try to compose our shots if possible. I think the thing that sells me on the 7D is the size of the sensor and the HD video capability.
What is the general consensus on the video?

The 5DII has great video capability.
