I'm travelling internationally in a couple of weeks, and want to get a Pelican to check through rather than carrying all my kit (basically the sig below) in a backpack as carryon. I've done this on past trips, but that backpack ends up weighing 25 lbs, and is heavy to walk jetways with. I thought it would make things easier to pack and check the gear, and use my backpack for books and magazines on the plane.

First, do you think it's a good idea to check through camera equipment, do you worry about loss, theft?

Second, if that's not an issue, which Pelican will hold the kit in my sig? How big do I have to go? The only shoulder bag I'm taking besides the Thinktank backpack is the small Lowepro Classified 140.

Everything I own except the tripod legs (below) including accesories, an Epson P-3000 harddrive, cables, battery charger, polarizers, grad ND, etc.. fit in a Lowepro Dryzone 200 (100% waterproof) backpack. I would consider this route. What screams "rob me" more than a pelican case being rolled by? Additionally, international travel may restrict you to one carry on. However, I am sure you have researched this already. Just food for thought.

I wouldn't check expensive stuff in, unless I absolutely have to. Also watch those luggage carousels as a large Pelican would stand out. By default it would signal "expensive equipment" inside. Make sure you get an itemised travel insurance

Some international airlines are weighing carry-on luggage limit is 7kg , so this might be an issue with the Pelican. It's best to use something that doesn't look to heavy, even though it is.

Thanks for the tip. I didn't realise that they were weighing carryons, but I checked with my airline and it's not a problem. And I like the fact that the Pelicans look like they're made out of plastic and look rather light, whereas they are literally bulletproof.

I was surprised that Pelican makes a bunch of small arms transport cases for the military. That's a good enough recommendation for me.

Oh yea, I have seen quite a few military, emergency crew and government use of Pelican cases. They really are the best!
