A good comparison review that also compared it to both the canon and sigma offerings.

Tools of the trade: Canon 400D, Canon 7D, Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS L M2, Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 OS, Canon MPE 65mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro, Tamron 24-70mm f2.4, Sigma 70mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 8-16mm f4.5-5.6, Raynox DCR 250, loads of teleconverters and a flashy thingy too

Note that the targets chose not to hold still during this exercise. Also note that this was a used lens, not new, but it worked like new.

Used to have one. Produced really good images, but everything else about it was blegh- the AF was the worst I have ever dealt with (i got O___o countless times outdoors from how loud the drill-type motor sounded). Build quality is okay, but nowhere near that of the competition, especially the L's. Sld it after 3 months when I just couldnt take the lousy AF anymore.

I had the Tamron 70-200mm when I had my D700. It's a very nice lens. The IQ is exceptional, but apparently those who need it for indoor sports and such are not happy with the AF speed. That was never a need or a worry for my style of shooting. I just recently purchased a Canon 70-200mm f/4 (which is excellent), but I thought long and hard about re-buying a Tamron. If I felt I needed the 2.8, I probably would have bought one.
