Hobbies are all irrational. Only sense it makes is if you share the hobby.

Couldnt have said it better myself.

Its so funny when someone doesnt share the hobby they think you are stupid and dont understand your excitement for something small like a speedlite or a grip.

Pfffft....I get excited about getting a bargain on a period-correct strap for my Anscoset or my $4 Canolite D from a sketchy redneck pawn shop for my Canonet lol

Spending fifty bucks to waste four hours hitting a small ball into the woods where it gets lost strikes me as a bit wierd too, but lots of people do it. They even spend thousands of dollars on the clubs so they can wander around losing balls.

Thats a weird thing I do. Though I don't spent nearly as much on that as photo equipment.
I agree with the general feeling on this thread. Hobbies are often weird or occasionally seen as awesome when the right person is doing it. And if you aren't weird something is wrong with you.

I used to beat myself silly and spend myself poor on off road motorcycles. Most sundays found me out trying to go fast through all that beautiful country I missed, all I ever saw was a 6 inch wide strip 50 miles long. How stupid was that?
Fishing is all about spending hundreds of dollars a pound for fish and getting wet and cold doing it. I still try not to think about how many wonderful seafood dinners I could have had for a fraction of the money I have spent.
Photography is at least seeking beauty and learning the art of sharing it with others effectively. compared to other things I have done, this makes so much more sense, even if we are all a bunch of weirdos.

I'll check the weird box, I think my dogs are even beginning to roll their eyes when they see the camera.

Hey Brenda, your dogs need to talk to my dogs about that...they'd all agree!

bw!

I think a little weird does us all good - its when it becomes a lot of weird that people should worry about.

My other hobbies are Lawn bowls (rolling 4 large balls at a smaller ball against someone who is trying to do the same thing), RC cars (spending lots of money fixing tiny cars so I can run them round a track time and time again and then breaking more things) so I think photography is the best of a strange bunch

Anything we ourselves don't regularly do is "a bit weird". If the shop owner were a hobbyist photographer he wouldn't have said that at all.

Reminds me of the time I took my camera to the local recycling centre and took photos. The guys working there were watching me and discussing amongst themselves as to what I could be taking the photos for. One of them finally came over to ask me why I was taking the photos and I told him that it's a hobby and for fun. He turned and gave a shrugged shoulders to his colleagues. Haha!

And Hi to all! I'm new :)

ha it will. i quit smoking, drinking, and partying (im a college student) just to help save money for a huge overhaul of my equipment...along with that ive been skimping on peoples holiday gifts, trips for fast food, and most of all decreasing the quality of the dates with my girlfriend severely hahaha

thank you potn for making me the cheapest and biggest penny pinching person i have ever met :P
