Hi,

I currently have an XTI and plan to getting a 50D soon. In my lens collection, my main two lenses are Canon 17-55 2.8 IS, and Sigma 55-70. I have been thinking about getting an all-around lens when I get 50D. Since I am getting a new lens, I will have limited budget for a new lens. Would you guys recommend Sigma 18-200mm lens? If not any other decent (inexpensive) long lens?

Thanks.

Canon EOS 400D Xti (Poor man's 1D,) Canon 50mm 1.8 II, Sigma 55-200mm f/4-5.6, Canon 18-55mm Kit; Canon 17-55mm 2.8 IS

Why don't buy a compact camera instead of a all-around lens as the Sigma?

Would be a very transportable solution and you spend the same money while after you buy the 50d, in future, you could think about another lens.

Mortify a reflex with similar lenses I think its a pity. :(

Do the 50D justice. Be patient, save up and get a 24-105mm L. I'm sure you wouldn't regret it.

Hi, I do have a PS camera but I don't think I get the same controlls as I get with my DSLR. If I got for a better PS camera, I will end up spend 300-400 for a camera with decent controlls. Might as well get a lens for my current camera.

What do you think?

55-250.

Hi, I don't think 55 is wide enough, especially on a crop camera.

Hi Paul,

I like that lens but I think it is not long enough. I used to have a 70-200 2.8 which is a great lens but I sold that to pay for some other stuff. I do not know how good the Sigma lens is but I like the range. Canon also has 18-200mm lens for almost double the amount of the Sigma lens but I don't know the quality difference between the two lenses.

17-55 is an all-round, general-purpose lens.

I wouldn't bother with any super-zoom lens, with the exception of the Sigma 50-500 OS (Bigma II), which is really a super-telephoto which can also go to 50mm.

An used compact camera (even old model) with manual control could be find without spend much money (200 dollars) or less.
You could try a search on the web, ebay, etc.

bannedPermanent ban

An 8mm fisheye is about as close to an all-around lens as you'll get. Other than that, stitching.

cheers, juice (Canon shooter, Elinchrom lighter, but pretty much agnostic on brands.)

Thanks everyone. I take it no one is really warm towards Canon or Sigma 18-200mm idea?

As others have pointed out, if it's wide zoom range you want, get something like a Panasonic TZ7 or FZ35.

Mating a high-pixel density DSLR like the 50D with a compromise superzoom lens just does not making any sense. You will lose on both the portability front and in image quality.

You might want to reconsider your 50D purchase if you have to cut corners on the lenses -- glass before body.

I had the Canon 18-200 lens for about a year. It is a great all around lens. I upgraded to the 24-105L and love it. But you are right the reach is just not enough for me either. So for now I have the 55-250 IS, which seems to be nice also.
