If you think it's long enough for streets, then it's good for streets :-).
On a FF camera I think it's not long enough..

Everyone's tastes differ... 50mm, 85mm, 100mm, 135mm... Try each focal length and find what seems right for you.

It's THE portrait lens par excellence. It can of course be used for other things, but it's overkill compared to arguably nice and less expensive street lenses. For street shooting i would go for the 35L, 50L or the 135L.

It's portrait abilities are never disputed, but personally I find that it is capable on FF as a street lens too. The very narrow DOF ability will allow you to selectively focus your subject. The only drawback is the slow AF, but it has not ruined my experience with the lens.

Check out the sample archive, you'll see a lot of different uses: https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=224258

I use it for pretty much any type of shot. I'm more concerned using the right FL than the fact it's a great portrait lens.

85mm is the classic waist-up portraiture lens on 135/FF...shooting distance about 8-10'

Its suitability on the street is wholly dependent upon what shooting distance you want to work from, along with how tight/loose of framing you are willing to accept!

85L is nice quality for portraits, but AF might be too slow for street

85mm never limit to only portrait, it is also good for wedding, indoor sport and more.
When you use it on your 5d camera, then it is perfect for street as you do not want to come close to the subject. I wish I could have budget to get 85mm 1.2L too :)

too slow for weddings unless you're using it for the bridal portrait.

I will politely and humbly disagree with this statement. It's worked for me, although it may not suit others.

Even on a 5D, I've enjoyed using it for candids. Shooting weddings I usually mount an 85L and a 35L to two bodies and I'm good to go.

:) Let me re-phrase that... For me, AF was too slow when i used it to shoot weddings. Although I had great results using it when i did the formal portraits of the couple.

Hey just because it's 85mm doesn't mean it's "only for portrait" ;)

I've seen some nice street shots with it on this forum before. Just probably not suitable for anything too fast-moving, but then it works nicely.. f/1.2's shallow DOF is also quite fun to play with.

I think the 85 f1.8 might be a tad more suitable for street photography, where people are moving... but nonetheless, I agree the 85L has a wonderful bokeh!
I just ordered the 85L for static portraits, and planning to sell the 85 f1.8
