Red Eye Mission!!!!

I just went through a bunch of snaps on my friends' FB pages, and I'm ALWAYS amazed at the amount of red eye, I see. Even on important snapshots (like, say, someone's first communion). It's such a simple correction...with the basic program that came with your camera! Or some other free photo editing. So, why don't they fix it??? And, why is it so bad in the first place? Do they not realize their camera probably has a red eye reduction mode. (And I know for a FACT that most of these friends have decent point and shoots that should have that option!)

I'm fascinated with number of people who print pictures of their kids with bright red demon eyes. It's epidemic.

So, now, my mission is to explain to all my acqaintances that it's a simple fix. Is anyone with me????

I had gone YEARS without seeing red eye in any of my pictures, and then I bought an S90 and did a couple of pictures inside with the built-in flash. This resulted in red eye. I was sad.

The problem with built in red eye reduction is that it not only eliminates the red eye, but it also great decreases your chances of getting a good expression because people think the initial light that is coming out of the camera is the flash, and when the flash finally DOES fire, the subject has stopped smiling. I disable that function on any P&S camera that I use.

So, LauraBella, you can add me to the list of people irked by seeing red eye in photos that are for public consumption as it is so easy to edit them out. BUT....that is why they pay us pros the "big bucks", cuz we don't make pics like that. : )

I agree with everything you say, but I do kinda think the demon-eyes take away a great, great deal from the picture, so if people aren't going to edit, they might as well risk the expression loss with the red-eye.

I know it's lost cause, too, lol...but I'm still going to try to point it when I can!

If you want to take good picture...shoot RAW and immerse yourself in PP of some kind.

It certainly doesn't eliminate it, but it does help reduce it somewhat.

I agree with suecassidy. The moment and expression can't be fixed/replaced, but the redeye can. Their expressions are what make or break the picture.

Most people are pleased with there snapshots, and probably don't even care about red eye, let alone trying yo fix it. Just don't get me started on date stamps!

The real question is, why do you care?

Just tell them you have a special camera that captures the true nature of the subject.

That's not red-eye, the kid IS demonic.

I care when the red eye is on my niece and nephew. :) And, since I didn't take them, I typically don't have the digital copy to fix. Otherwise it just strikes me as peculiar that it's so often left in; not just in a single photo (which doesn't seem odd to me at all) but in whole collections (which does seem odd). It looks like people would at least adjust their favorites. But to each their own. I only really "care" when it's on my niece or nephews.

Don't worry, I'm not going to go hitting people with my criticisms (though I did need to vent). But...whenever the conversation allows me to POLITELY mention the simple correction, I'm going to do it. :)

Probably wouldn't have mentioned it if I hadn't just went through a ton of someone's red-eyed first communion pics. Demon eyes at first communion were more ironic and made an impression. :)

While you are at it, can you explain to everyone at my daughters dance recital that their on-board flash has no chance in hell of reaching the stage? That gets pretty annoying after a while.

If they all time it right they might get enough light.
