As for flash "reach", I was able to reach across the street and down about four houses with my 430EXII firing at 1/1, the Xsi at ISO1600, and my Sigma at f/1.4

The simplest way to avoid red-eye is to avoid using a flash source that is too close to the axis of the lens. Put a Speedlite on the camera and red-eye goes away without needing to resort to any tricks or post-processing editing. Built-in flashes are absolutely horrid as the light source for photos of people.
