What is this strange ghost by the ball? It looks like a double image from the ball, but I don't know if this is a camera artifact or a lens artifact.

Anyone have any ideas? I was shooting through a fence with the lens centered in a diamond hole and the hood pressed against the chain link.

1D Mark IV with 100-400.

400mm
f/5.6
1/1250
ISO400

I'd blame the nature of quantum mechanics.

Nope. I have never seen anything like this before.

I was thinking that I got a double image of the ball due to some freak of the fence interacting with the lens, but as I look at the crop the seams on the ghost ball are not in the same location.

Wasn't there a ghosting issue when the 7D first came out. Something about the buffer not being fully cleared when shooting images rapid fire if I remember correctly.

No, bottom of the 1st. Also, if that ghost was a real second ball being thrown across the diamond it would have nearly hit the pitcher in the head (note that the balls appear to be about the same size, so the ghost is not a second ball far behind).

Well unless the kid in the picture has a NASTYYY curve ball...i dont think that would be possible considering the placement of the ghost.

This was something like photo 4787 from the body and the first time I ever saw such a thing. I guess I'll just take another 5000 shots and see what happens.

Naah, it's clearly an image of the ball. You can see a red thread pattern on it like the original. I would email this to Canon customer service. Unless they hear about these bugs they can't produce a fix for it.

My money would be with your guess on some weird interaction of the fence that you're shooting against there.
