Would -5 -3 0 +3 +5 Not have got the same details? as you might tell I've never played with HDR in any anger so might be being very stupid. Or are you just experimenting with taking things to the extreme (not like you, I know lol) Well With the example you posted above, you have a 2ev gap between 0 and 3. In that sort of range some things could going from being slightly underexposed in 0 EV (IE not quite a shadow but nearly) To being over exposed in 3 EV. I err on the mantra that I would rather take many photos If i have the time and capture the whole range.
As you can see, the first casualty of using few exposures is that concrete and more notably the seps up to eros are darker. This in turn as the crop suggests leads to a noisier image as it tries to adjust the darks to compensate.
Hope this kinda shows the advantage you get if you have the time to be anal, the more info that photomatix gets the more balanced the tonal range Neal EOS 7D, EOS 40D, EOS 650, 24-70mm f/2.8 L, 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS II, 70-200mm f/4.0 L, EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5, 50mm f/1.8 I

I stayed on a bit after I was finished as they had a really good band called "Hobo Jones & the Junkyard Dogs". Oooo sounds good, whos wedding was it?
