Well With the example you posted above, you have a 2ev gap between 0 and 3. In that sort of range some things could going from being slightly underexposed in 0 EV (IE not quite a shadow but nearly) To being over exposed in 3 EV. I err on the mantra that I would rather take many photos If i have the time and capture the whole range.

I only ever do these mental exposure HDRs when i have time to compose, set up a tripod and boom.

If I'm on a walkabout I will just used AEB (as i told Kevin I have set up C1 to do a -1 0 1, C2 to do -2 0 2 and C3 to do -3 0 3 when i need it on the fly.) For example most people do -2 0 2 AEB HDRs.

As a quick example, I've redone that HDR as a 3 exposure (-2 0 2 and split it 50/50 with the 11 exposure. Both have identicle tone mapping settings, applied, so the only difference is the number of exposures making up the HDR.

As you can see, the first casualty of using few exposures is that concrete and more notably the seps up to eros are darker.

This in turn as the crop suggests leads to a noisier image as it tries to adjust the darks to compensate.

Hope this kinda shows the advantage you get if you have the time to be anal, the more info that photomatix gets the more balanced the tonal range
