Evening all. Had a wedding today which went well, except for when the venue owner had a go at me for putting some of my business cards on the bar and a few of the tables...thing is I'd asked a member of staff first who said it was fine. I think the owner was a bit of a control freak. P'd me off for a while so I went and took some photos of a butterfly! :D

Wire wool and a bit of rope, a slower swing is needed I think so that the sparks look more spark like not line like though.

Can I check this sounds right for the aircraft tomorrow.

Manual, f/8 to f/10 (ish), spot metering, AI Servo, bundles of luck.
Sound about right ???

Indeed, bit slower and maybe less spins?

What aperture where you shooting at?

A couple of shots from tonights experiment, did try orbing but ended up nearly setting fire to myself so gave up on that.

Nice effort but it all looks out of focus which is a shame. Perhaps try being a bit further away and focusing on a mark before you begin.

Just another reminder from me of FIA2008 prompted by seeing Ian's lovely vapour shots from RIAT & FIA trade days

An F18 to share ~ 2008 was pretty dire with frequent showers and low cloud base and was the first time I saw the Vulcan :D

Took EuroNifty (from the "Where's Nifty " thread) to the wedding job today. I didn't use it very much and certainly not for the important bits but I did whip it out a couple of times for some detail shots and candids:

To my shame I have not used Manual for decades. I tend to use Av as the aperture rules for me.

When the aircraft are higher than the land i.e. no dark backgrounds I go +EC of anything from + 2/3 to +2 (the brighter the sky the higher the EC but watch the histogram to avoid blowing it i.e. exposing for the subject not the sky)

I keep the ISO as low as possible

Shutter speeds to aim for - fast jets anything above 1/1000 is fine unless they are doing a stall speed pass.

Prop planes keep the shutter somewhere between 1/120 & 1/320

Helicopters are harder the Chinnok could need as low 1/80 to get the rotor blur but the Lynx et al 1/80 to 1/200

All the above has been what I found works for me but IMO these are only guidelines as each plane can challenge the "rules" such as my comment about a jet going very slowly and then throttling up with afterburners on within a couple of seconds.

Yes, to AI servo but do not just mash the shutter button ~ keep the aircraft on the focus spot (central rules for me) and if the AI slips release the shutter button but still follow it and try to reaquire it (this I understand can work well for BIF photography).

Edit - metering I find myself using Centre Weighted Average a lot these days.

HTH & anyone else please chime with feedback as appropriate??? It has been a while since I checked EXIF but that is what I recall working to.

HTH but do check your histogram and remember the aircraft are the subject so some of the time (I think unavoidably) you can get blown highlights in the clouds for example and even off of the shinier bits of fuselage. Tweak and adjust as circumstances dictate.

I am rusty so will be doing just that ~ right batteries should have charged by now ready to load them next before I forget, CFs ready. I am in two minds whether to lug the monopod around

Very cool, but very out of focus. Jealous that you got a chance to try this out though...looking forward to your future shots :)

just back from footy and a few pints in the pub! enjoy FIA everyone who is going. I'm having a day off! Shooting a birthday party on Sunday, full background set up to kiddies playing the lot, should be fun!

Lovely butterfly Mike!
