Hi Sharp-shooter - When I use a monopod I find it only really practical or necessary to attach the camera or the lens directly to the top of the monopod. Now, if I use a tripod I usually use a cheap cine head or a Slik pistol grip thing. However, and I'll be shot down in flames for this - I hardly use a tripod at all but take several shots from the same viewpoint - the days of ISO 50 film with 24 or 36 exposures has come to an end. Most memory cards will give 400+ shots, so why not take multiple exosures and be selective. Another good thing to have in the car or bag is a Jessops 'Pod' - it's a sort of bean bag with a tripod thread - you can place it on top of a tripod or a wall or whatever and it really is stable.

Thanks Ray. I like the idea of the flexibility of the mono. I ave a 190porxb tripod, but its a bit heavy to use as a mono. Im guessing even with the mono packed up its still quite stable as you can tuck it in to yourself to stabilize.
All i have to do now is decide which one to go for. Id like one with the same legs as my manfrotto tripod, as the design is great and sturdy. :)

It was nice knowing Adrian was out on circuit getting the main race photos, allowing me to be a bit more creative with the atmospheric images.

Looks like you had a very good day there and now Ben will be nagging you for a minibike next ;) :)

A question on that last one ? Was that OCF with the flash at about the level of the bike handlbars?

That was a great meal ~ you must have a good set of pans :p

Monopod head ~ thoughts???

When using a lens with a mounting collar screwing the monopod directly to it works very well as to rotate the camera from landscape to portrait orientation is easy peasy. However, if the lens has no such ring you are fixing to the camera body mount point ~ for the mobility of movement on this I have the Manfrotto tilt head with QR plate this serves well for rapid changes to the orientation of the camera though positional height and angle does change a little. I used that setup with my 40D & 24-1-5 combo second shooting with Ian at a 10Km run, I think he was pleased with the set I took ;)

Hi Brownie. No colar on my sigma. But the tilt head sounds a good idea. Will this fit the mounting plate i already have fitted onto the camera from my tripod?

These two having a much more "up close & personal" feel are the best of the bunch IMO especially the last one :D

Hehe thanks.
The last one was just a 580EX on camera, I was too knackered by that point to do anything fancy.

I did have a good experiment witrh Adrian doing the Marquee bike shotos

we had a 580EX on a flexTT5 pocketwizard off to camera left, and that gave good light on the rider/girls, but the bike itself was too dark, so I put another flash on top of the minitt11 transmitter and dialed it down (-2) this gave a much more balanced shot, all using ETTL.

Just a quick one before bed. Been playing with the grain tool in Lightroom. Not sure i like it - it just looks like noise to me rather than an a film grain. I dont think i will use it again.

re: monopod discussions.
I've always used my monopod fitted directly to the lens collar, I've tried it on the camera and everything is too front heavy, and of course you cannot spin it.

I would definately invest in a collar for the lens.

Well if you are using Manfrotto tripod head with the plate this came/comes with then the answer would be yes? i.e. the 200PL plate !

Now these two are cream of the crop ~ I see a ring flash on your wishlist...........a splash of light will IMO give many such macros that extra something :)

Nice one!

Are you thinking strobes or flash guns? I got to play with the elinchrom ranger (battery pack + strobes) a couple of years ago and really liked that set up. I always figured if I was going to pick up some portable strobes it would be something like that.
