Academic for you now I know. But when I swapped out my old OS drives for larger/newer ones I used a drive cloning program which I think took approx 30mins at the time ~ this was from a fully working C drive to a new one prepped in the cloning prog with the various partitions I had setup and then cloning each 'drive' in turn to the various partitions.....or at least I think that is what I did, it was a while back  Like you I had thoughts of "I hope I am doing this right and will it work AOK...."?

PS Something nagging at me about copying an OS boot drive.....I hope one of the other guys can clarify but I thought simple copying did not "copy" the OS even in DOS command line. You need a cloning (specific copying?) utility to make sure you get an exact copy of the drive. Or is your "backup" a self executing utility you created to have a restorable 'image' of the drive....???

 many moons ago after being made redundant one of the jobs I applied for was a civvy in the RAF as a photograph analyst, never got offered ~ would have been IMO a very rewarding job, the nations loss ;)

Sounds like a very interesting job, the wife was in the air cadets as a youth and so she's always the one who does the airplane ID, she spotted it a mile off! :D
