It's pretty obvious if it's a good one or a bad one. It's just a metal ring with a nut on it. Definitely can overthink this one.

J.

maybe i am over thinking this one but this metal ring locks your L lens in place as well as the body. is the optika a good choice?

Frankly either tripod ring could loosen and cause your lens/camera to fall.
I would think if you knew the vulnerabilities of the Optika ring you should be set.

Read an interesting comment about the Optika ring:
...to change camera orientation, i.e. rotate from horizontal to vertical, I have to unscrew the collar screw, pull the collar open a little, rotate the camera/lens, reset & tighten the screw. Reviews I have read of the Canon manufactured unit indicate one need only loosen the collar screw a little to rotate the lens/camera.

I would get a Manfrotto 190 series tripod with flip levers, not the screws. Get a Manfrotto ballhead in the $90-120 range and be done with it. Should cost you about $200 total from B&H website. For a bit more money, and if you ever plan on shooting macro, get the 190xprob which has the center column going horizontal option. Slick. I have the 055xprob. Same as the 190 but a bit beefier (and heavier).

Canon 5D Mark II & 50D with 17-40, 24-105, 100-400, 50 f/1.4, 100 f/2.8 macro, and 1.4TC

FEISOL CT-3442 (ARL) tripod w/ Photo Clam 40-NS ballhead:lol:
