I am looking for a ND x8 (82mm) filter to work with a 16mm wide angle lens. Now it needs to be a slim case filter so that it doesn't cause vignetting. What filters would you suggest I have a look at?

is this for the 16-35 (another question that could be answered if everyone had a gear list in their sig)?

have you considered square/rectangular?

Yes, it is for the 16-35, actually I don't see how that information is different from saying it's an 82mm filter size wide angle lens :)

I prefer circular ones, and actually I already found one from 'marumi'. I don't know the brand however, so I think there could be something better out there.

82mm are not cheap. Marumi are good. Cokin are also good. Once you've got the holder etc then subsequent filter are a little cheaper.

Well, whether you need a slim, or can manage with a regular, thickness filter often depends not just on the focal length of the lens, but on the design of the specific lens. An "82 mm wide angle lens" could also describe Sigma's 24-75 f/2.8 zoom. 24 mm on a full frame body is a wide angle; wider than 16 on an APS-C crop, in fact.

As a matter of fact, from my experience I can tell that 82mm filters are cheaper than 77mm ones. Maybe it's just in Europe, but I think that 77mm filters are more popular and that's why the companies are trying to make more money by increasing the price of the most popular products.

i have a marumi ND filter and its great... lenstip.com has a thing about uv filters and marumi ranked 5 out of like 20, even though its uv and not ND. but at least it shows they make decent stuff.

i actually use all marumi filters and never had any complaints.

on another note i have a normal frame filter (not slim) on my 16-35 and i cant see a difference in vignetting or seeing the frame of the filter at all, i took shots with the filter on and off... oh and it is on a FF camera
