which wide angle (<24mm) would be best for a 5dmk2?

i want it mainly for landscape shots so sharp is more important than fast.

If you want absolute sharpness, the TS-E 17mm or the Zeiss ZE 21mm should be at the top of your list.

the ts-e are too expensive for me, i suspect the zeiss would be too. something priced mid-range but reasonably good quality is what i am looking for.

The Canon 17-40mm is probably the best "budget" UWA for full-frame.

Canon 17-40, Voigtlander 20, Samyang 14, 20-35L, Sigma/Canon 15 FE, Zuiko 18 f/3.5, 21 f/3.5, 21 f/2.8.

the options for wider than 24 on full frame aren't too numerous. The Zuiko 21 2.8 and 3.5 are both very nice. The Voigtlander is a pancake lens, which is neat. The samyang is very, very wide and sharp. The fisheyes are sharp. 17-40 is a heck of a deal.

edit: I forgot the flektogon 20!

If you are on a budget the 17-40mm is good enough for most purposes - except its sharpness is lacking in the corners (and some CA but that is correctable in post) - might be a concern if you are blowing up an image to A0 size or larger.

Here is a 100% corner crop between the 17-40mm and the TS-E 17mm, taken moments apart - without any PP except developing from RAW with default settings using ACR.

For the EF mount, the 17 TSE and ZE 21 are in a league of their own. With an adapter the 14-24 is pretty amazing too.

I totally agree, those are the best.

I have the 16-35 and its not bad -- better than the poor reviews it usually gets. But for sheer quality and the occasional landscape I do, I go for the 21 ZE. The 18 ZE is very good as well (much cheaper than the 17TS-E), a newer design than the 21, but with some mustache distortion.

The Tokina is a crop sensor lens.

For full frame there is the Sigma EX 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 DG HSM. This lens is really wide.

Anyone here using the Zeiss 18mm? I'd love tho get the 21 ZE but it's too close to my 24L II. I'm wondering if the 18 ZE is worth any upgrade to the 17-40.

There we go, thats what we needed. "Mid-Range" is a relative term. It varies greatly from person to person. What we really needed to know was how much YOU wanted to spend. I would suggest you look at the Canon 17-40.
