I am looking for a new camera to use along side my 5D for weddings. If price was no option which of these cameras would you recommend? I am leanimg towards 1D MK II because of the great deal being old and the 45 point AF. Only concern is the newer technology of 50D and 7D make them better options?

Eos 1D MK II
Eos 5D
Eos 50D
Eos 7D

Of your options, probably the 7D as its the newest technology. If I could go off of your list, 5DII.

The 7D would be light years better than the 1D II. That said, I wouldn't shoot a crop sensor camera as my main.

Thanks for the input. I want to keep it around $1,000 so that is why I did not include the 5d mk II. Another 5d or 7d would be slightly higher than I want to spend. I am just worried about my 5d shutter going out soon as I have had it over 3 years and need something to fill during potential repair.

After several years of switching, changing and upgrading camera bodies, I absolutely love the combination of my 5D II and the 1D III. Maybe that's stretching the budget for you, I don't know, but it seems to be the PERFECT two bodies to have.

btw, wrong section. This should be in the Camera Bodies section... ;)

I know that would be ideal but I am young and new to the industry...3 years in weddings. So I can't afford the best of the best. I have to be good with what I have

I've been doing weddings for almost 2 years now. I found a way to afford what I need. There are other things I'd like as well (tokina 11-16 perhaps, more 580EX flashes), but I'm more in the fill-in stage than the foundation-building stage.

I wouldn't mind a second 5d but I was interested in a compliment that might be able to do something a 5d can't. Like a crop sensor giving lenses extra range if I needed it or faster continuous shooting with better AF. The thing that sparked any interest in the 1d mk II is that I can get one for about 950.

Gaining a little reach at the loss of IQ and iso performance doesnt seem worth it to me. I understand complimentary gear ( I back my 5D with a 40D), but I do a lot of general work and only the occasional wedding.

If you commit to a 1 series, you will never ever want to shoot with anything less than a pro body ever again! choose wisely!

The one area the 1D Mk IIn will not hold up against the 5D or 7D is in high ISO conditions. It is a great camera and the build and AF are outstanding but it never comes out of my bag in a wedding environment other than as a remote camera in very specific situations.

I just Shot a 7d wedding.. and it was amazing vs.. my initial d-slr.. the xsi (rebel).. I have not shot a 5dmkII or any of the 1d mk ??? BUt I would expect they would be amazing in that they are so much quicker than consumer models.

I didnt have time to trial the video ability..

I got the 7D to work with my 5D2. At first, I depended on my 5D2 all the time, now I shoot with both because the 7D is that good. I am hoping to use the 7D this weekend for a wedding for video. Working on practicing this week.

If I have to choose from what you have, sell the 5D and 30D and get the 5D2 and then save for the 7D. In the meantime, get the 5D2 first, as it's my primary for wide shots. That happens more times than not.

Keep your 5D, it's a great camera. I'd get a 50D to complement, if you can't afford a 1DIII. That'll give you a crop body PLUS the advantage of a pop up flash! Don't know why Canon thinks it's never necessary on a 'pro' body. In my wedding on Saturday, I could have used it ONCE. Yes, only once did I need it, but I thought then, wow, a pop up right HERE in this situation would be perfect. Sometimes you just need a tiny pop of light. So that's my suggestion... ;)

And plan on getting a second 5D in the near future. Then, after you do that, you'll be able to sell your 2 5D's and buy a 5DII in it's place and you'll still be upgrading. But there's not THAT much difference in the 5D and the 5DII... (<--- ducks and runs from room...) What I mean is that in a wedding, the 5D will do you just fine until you can afford more...
