I started a thread in the Glamour & Nude Photo Sharing Section with some photos taken with my recently acquired Kacey Enterprises Beauty Reflector and Kacey Bracket (link to G&N post).

I've been getting quite a few questions via PM since some people can't post in the G&N section. Since I've been fielding quite a few duplicate questions, I figure I should post something in the equipment section dedicated to lighting.

Anyway, I have a blog entry regarding the Kacey Enterprises beauty reflector/dish here: http://www.ocabj.net/?p=879 (external link)

In it, I do explain how I discovered the dish and why I ended up going with it and the other options I considered.

One of the FAQs I've been receiving is who made it and where did I get it. Well, I title and mention the company several times: Kacey Enterprises. A quick google search will return http://www.kaceyenterprises.com (external link)

Another FAQ I've been fielding is how much does it cost. Well, I noted it in the aforementioned blog entry, but it was $330 plus shipping for the dish, double flash bracket, and diffusion sock. You can save $35 by going with the single flash bracket and save another $16 by omitting the sock.

That said, it's about $300.

Another FAQ is "should I get one" or go another route (i.e. Alien Bee).

Again, I sort of covered this in the aforementioned blog entry, but in all honesty, for $300, you could buy an AB400 strobe and an Alien Bee beauty dish. For a little more, you can get an AB800 with a dish.

But my situation is that I already had two 580 EX II units. I didn't have ABs, and was going to order an AB1600 and an AB800 last month, but ended up ordering an Einstein instead (which I have still on backorder). I had another shoot coming up and wanted to use a beauty dish, so I decided to risk money on the Kacey, which worked with my existing Speedlite and PocketWizard (MiniTT1 and FlexTT5) setup.

Also, the Kacey dish will fit on an Alien Bee, White Lightning, or Einstein with Kacey's ring adapter (~$20). So the dish is fairly versatile. The only issue with the Kacey dish on strobes is that the center reflector can warp with modeling lights. While they do make a swappable reflector that will accommodate short term use of modeling lights, I situation for indoors is that I would use the dish with 580 EX II since indoors would require low power anyway. Outdoors, I wouldn't even use a modeling light.

Anyway, there you have it. I just wanted to get something posted here in order to answer any questions people have after seeing my post in G&N, and who couldn't reply to my post in G&N.

Nice wrap up.
Be interesting to see how they'd go for full body shots in the studio.
Still thinking about the Kacey dish.

Thanks.

I'm probably going to order the grid pretty soon. I'm interested to see what kind of effects I can get with the grid.

that bracket sucks, ring is flimsy...when you're ready to play with the big boys get the Kacey setup which will support 2 speedlights, 2 wireless triggers, bracket tilts and is a solid mass of steel...

Surely the 'big boys' use studio strobes rather than resort to 2 speedlights in one modifier??

I didn't use the ring in that design - i used a modded 'univeral' ring which is a lot more heaby duty. If the 'big boys' wish to pay stupid money for something that can be made just as good and considerably cheaper, go for it...i'll spend what i save on my son

Don't get me wrong, the Kacey setup looks awesome, it's definitely on my wish-list...but for those of use with tight budgets:(, I may have to try out Karfeef's setup....pretty damn impressive results if I may say so.;)

By the way, I just got done looking at your site Todd....wow, stunning gallery. Awesome pics of DEP: http://ishootshows.com …-dish-examples-portraits/ (external link), those guys are pretty crazy ....did you just use your DIY Beauty Dish for those 2 shots, if so that's impressive.

Edit: Lol, Ummm...I could be wrong but I think karfeef dose not = Todd....sorry I thought you were linking to your site and that you came up with that Dish...my bad. ;) O well, if Todd is a member here (and happens to stumble on this thread), what was your setup on the DEP shoot. Ok, I need to go to bed and get some rest now.

After weeks of looking at test images and reading reviews, I finally ordered a Kacey Enterprises BD.

Now I can't wait to get it!

i have been going back and forth as to whether i should order this. i am just having a tough time justifying the price since i dont get enough paid work to get a return. but that doesnt usually stop me.

can i use 1 580 and 1 430 together? or should they both be the same?

i assume the modeling light on my Genesis will melt the diffusion panel? does the speedo modded dish suffer from this as well?

Wouldn't this work for hot shoe flash as well as AB? I haven't seen any reviews. But it is $100 with the bracket.

If I went by that ideology, I wouldn't own any dSLR gear. ;)

I'm not sure if the light will be uneven. I think one way I could test that is to put two 580 EX II units in the dish+bracket, one at 1/4 and one at 1/16 and see what happens. Honestly, a single 580 alone is going to be pretty strong indoors. I doubt you'd use full power on a 580 in the Kacey in most situations.

You'll have to contact Kacey directly about this. I don't have any idea.

There are two reasons for getting the DBL bracket.
1) Reducing recycle times by being able to reduce power on both flashes. (Increasing speed and wear on flashes)
2) Doubling the flash output when needed

We mount our metal center diffuser when a customer orders the dish for a studio flash. It is also available as a optional purchase if your dish was setup for speedlights and you was one that can take the heat of studio strobe modeling lights.
