Rosella, Hibiscus subdariffa, is probably native to west Africa but has naturalised across the tropical world over the last 500 years, including around old homesteads and bush camps in Australia. A highly useful plant: its sepals (the red bits) can be eaten (and are very high in vitamin C), made into jam, tea or cordial, and used for food colouring; its petals and leaves can be eaten in salads; its seeds can be roasted and ground into flour; and its stem fibre can be used like jute.
