Those of you who have gone to Greece in the summer, what did you take with you in terms of gear?

LOL!

My mom lives on Naxos. I've been there just about every year since 2002.

According to her, and keep in mind that she was recently in Athens, the reports of horror are terribly exaggerated. Most of the riots are restricted to certain neighborhoods of Athens.

Otherwise, I think life on the islands is normal, aside from anticipated lower tourist traffic this year.

I lived in Greece for over a year before coming here (Baghdad). An UWA is very handy there.

As for the riots/demonstrations there, they are usually scheduled long in advance. Register with the American Embassy in Athens & they will send you messages warning where not to go. Either that or just avoid downtown Athens. A bigger problem is travel disruptions due to the frequent strikes (I think that the port is closed on Memorial Day, for example).

I'm goeing to Kos next week, I'm taking my Tokina 11-16, my Sigma 30 1.4, and I'm still debating if I should take my Canon 100 2.0.

Last year I took only a Sigma 18-50 to Kefalonia. Which also did the job.

A UWA lens can do most of holiday shots in Greece. Santorini is a place where you need to capture the sea and the white city on the shore, so a UWA is the main lens, also if you want to take some photos of the big bells or the mills, you would need a longet tele, but it's definately less useful than a UWA.

Santorini = steep up and down. Think of weight, if that is a factor for you.

As others have said, UWA like 10-22/11-16 for crop body, 17-40 for FF.

I also took a circ polarising filter and would recommend that. We stayed at Oia and one of the big things is the sunsets. Take a tripod if you can. And get there early, gets crowded. Scope the place out earlier in the day for best vantage points so you know where to camp.

Plenty of opportunities for panoramas too.

Well, I'd take the same kit as my Finnish trip: Zeiss 21mm Distagon, 24-105L, 70-200 f/4L on a 1Ds Mk3 body, with a Powershot G10 for backup and everyday carry.

Well, I didn't go, but when my parents did a couple years ago it was a K-1000 and a 50mm F/2 ;)
