I have the above lens and it shows the macro logo - how should I be using it in Macro mode? Is there a special way to get the Macro benefits from a lens?

Thanks and sorry for the dumb question!

the true 50mm macro is an f2.5, the f1.8 will need to be used with either extension tubes, a close up lens or reversed to get 1:1 magnification.

Forget that question - I realize I would need to get a mount to be able to do it.

you can buy different mounts for either reversing direct to the body or to another lens. Aperture must be changed whilst pressing DOF preview button with lens still attached to camera in the normal way otherwise you will be shooting at f1.8.
Some people just hold lens reversed against the body so you could see the results you can achieve right away.

Much easier to use it with a set of auto extension tubes eg Kenko.

Or you can just hold it backwards unmounted ;) sorta a pain, but considering the 50 1.8's light weight it shouldn't be too hard..

To preset the aperture, hold down the DOF button with the aperture you want set, remove the lens and hold onto it backwards in front of your camera and the lens should keep the aperture you set.
Or there are those $3 non-electrical contact extension tubes.. can easily get a few of those to get some high magnification! They are basically = the kenko tubes except you have to use the above method to change your aperture everytime, you don't keep your EXIF data, and they are of somewhat poorer build quality.

17 and learning..
